Solana Beach City Council approves EDCO rate increases – San Diego Union-Tribune

The Solana Beach City Council approved slight EDCO rate increases during its June 12 meeting.

The residential rate increased from $29.80 to $30.67 per month. For the most common type of commercial service, the rate increase is $130.02 per month to $133.89 per month.

“EDCO has submitted a rate review adjustment request for Fiscal Year 2024/2025,” according to a city staff report. “The CPI increased 2.969% for the period from second half of 2022, to the second half of 2023, and the tipping fee increased 3.47%, or $53.82 per ton, to $55.69 per ton.”

According to state law, the city has to hold a protest hearing in advance of increases to solid waste service charges. Residents and businesses have to receive notice of the proposed increases, followed by a chance to submit a written protest to the city. City staff said that nobody submitted protests ahead of the hearing at the council meeting, and there were no public speakers during the meeting.

Residential organic rates are included in the solid waste rates, Assistant City Manager Dan King said during the meeting. Commercial organic rate increases for the most common service level are increasing from $98.38 per month to $101.30 per month.

Under a franchise agreement between the city of Solana Beach and EDCO, EDCO can request a review each year aimed at adjusting the amount charged for its services, according to the city staff report.

Council members voted on April 10 to proceed with the noticing requirements ahead of the June hearing.
