Tether, Crypto Bootcamp Community Partner To Educate 5,000 People Across Africa On Bitcoin Pizza Day 2024

Tether Operations Limited, the largest company in the digital asset industry and CBC Blockchain Services Ltd. (“CBC”), are joining forces to educate thousands of cryptocurrency enthusiasts across Africa on BTC and blockchain technology to commemorate Bitcoin Pizza Day 2024 and celebrate Bitcoin’s stunning growth over the decade.

What is Bitcoin Pizza Day?

Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, was introduced in a white paper in 2008 by an individual or group with the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.

In early 2009, the genesis block on the Bitcoin network was mined, marking the launch of the first-ever digital currency that operates on a peer-to-peer (P2P) decentralized network.

Nakamoto’s invention of BTC marked the introduction and first application of blockchain or distributed ledger technology which has quickly grown to attain mainstream adoption.

However, BTC traded on no platform and had negligible adoption and zero value in its early years until 2010, when Laszlo Hanyecz created history by implementing the actual use case of BTC as a payment method.

On May 22, 2010, Hanyecz, a computer programmer, paid 10,000 BTC for two St John’s pizzas valued at $41, hence the tag Bitcoin Pizza Day.

This transaction marked the first well-known usage of BTC to purchase a physical item despite many claiming the programmer wasted the assets, citing BTC’s rise to an all-time high of over $73,000.

Since then, the Bitcoin community has celebrated Bitcoin Pizza Day on May 22 each year to commemorate the first documented commercial transaction using BTC.

The annual event serves as a reminder of the crypto asset’s humble beginnings and how far it has grown in value and adoption.

Tether collaborates with CBC’s Bitcoin Pizza Day Education Initiative

Beyond the festivity surrounding this significant event in the cryptocurrency community’s calendar, CBC has always seen Bitcoin Pizza Day as an avenue to educate people about the largest crypto asset by market capitalization and the innovations in its ecosystem.

This gave birth to the fast-rising industry event —Bitcoin Pizza Day Hangout— pioneered by CBC, a Nigeria-based blockchain community founded by Obinna Iwuno.

CBC single-handedly hosted the first Bitcoin Pizza Day Hangout in 2022 in 18 cities, reaching 3,000+ people.

Following the success of the groundbreaking event, several companies and projects collaborated with CBC to host the hangout in 31 cities worldwide in 2023, reaching an audience of 4,000+ crypto enthusiasts.

Focused on empowering and networking the world through cryptocurrency and blockchain education, CBC got support from the leading stablecoin issuer, Tether, to enable the education of more than 5,000 people on Bitcoin Pizza Day Hangout 2024.

The exciting event, hosted in 10+ cities across Africa, features seminars from industry experts, enlightening panel sessions, exhibitions, workshops, and free pizzas. To learn more about CBC’s Bitcoin Pizza Day Hangout 2024, visit here.

In explaining the drive behind the education initiative, CBC founder Obinna Iwuno said: “Bitcoin Pizza Day is the most significant event after Satoshi Nakamoto invented BTC and implemented blockchain technology.

Being the first implementation of blockchain technology, the launch of Bitcoin has revolutionized the finance sector, giving access to the unbanked and excluded financially and facilitating cross-border transactions easily, faster, and even cheaper.”

He added that “the emergence of Bitcoin has unlocked limitless possibilities, enabling anyone to introduce incredible innovations beyond cryptocurrency.

To this end, CBC leverages its annual Bitcoin Pizza Day Hangout hosted in several countries to sensitize and educate thousands of cryptocurrency enthusiasts across Africa.”
